The oldest and most iconic golf course in the world has many remarkable features which help make it so special. It is rightly named the ‘Home of Golf’ where golf was first played 600 years ago, and yet it still remains a real test of amateur and professional golfers alike. The Swilcan Bridge, Hell Bunker and Valley of Sin are recognised across the globe. 

Golf has been played here for over six centuries on a course that wasn’t architect-designed, but rather has evolved over time out of the natural terrain. Starting and finishing in the town, it is renowned for its huge double greens meaning that a golfer may face a 100-yard putt, compact shared fairways, and massive bunkers (of which there are 112). The 17th hole is often voted the toughest Par 4 in golf, with the tee shot having to cut over part of the famous Old Course Hotel, whilst the Road Hole bunker and the road itself await any loose shot into the green.

ARE THERE ANY RESTRICTIONS FOR PLAY ON ST ANDREWS OLD COURSE?

Handicap limit for men is 28 and 36 for ladies. All golfers must provide a current handicap certificate/card at time of check-in with the Old Course Starter. St Andrews Old Course is CLOSED every Sunday throughout the year - Day of Rest!

ST ANDREWS OLD COURSE BALLOT/LOTTERY

Anyone who hasn't managed to secure an Old Course Guaranteed Tee Time (as part of a package) there is no need to stress, it ain't over yet. There is still an opportunity to make your dreams come true through the Daily Ballot system. The St Andrews Old Course Ballot is drawn two days ahead of play with the exception of Friday as there is no play on the Old Course on Sundays. If you wish to enter the ballot for a tee time on Friday, you would apply on the Wednesday. If you wish to enter the ballot for a tee time on a Monday, you would apply on a Saturday...

- Deadline for entries is 2pm and the results are usually available from 4pm onwards
- If successful, payment of the Green Fee is made on the day at time of check-in

As part of your St Andrews Old Course Ballot Package, GHW Golf Tours will take care of the whole ballot process for you, leaving you free to concentrate on you game and enjoy your stay. Our representative knows where you're staying but will also request your cell number and email, in order that we can get in touch to advise you if you have been successful in the Old Course Ballot or not. Our representative will also assist with moving around any other pre-booked rounds or indeed booking additional rounds during your stay.

To enter the Old Course Ballot we would require the following details in advance:

- Names Of All Golfer's Home Clubs
- All Golfer's Handicaps

Certain times of the year are obviously better for gaining a tee time through the St Andrews Old Course Ballot. The winter months are generally quieter on St Andrews Old Course. During the summer season, the months with longer daylight hours up until around 10pm (Late May, June & July) there is generally better availability. April is knows to be a good month for entering the St Andrews Old Course Ballot.
